Character Design

For my final prosthetic design I have taken elements from researching Nika Danielska work and Guillermo Del Torro's work, Where I have then designed a creature based on my favourite details.

The bottom image shows a quick sketch of how I imagine my creature to look. The diamond shapes and almost web design at the top of the head are based on some of the work from Nika Danielska. When we look at the horns and swirly patterns on the head that is based on Guillermo Del Torro's film Pan's Labyrinth. I am still working on the design as I don't want my creature to look like the work of others.

Here is the sketch on a much bigger scale. I have still kept some of the elements from the first one but I feel the design on the head looks a little busy, so I will change it ever so slightly

For painting the prosthetic piece I have decided to create my prosthetic in earthy colours, but having the base green and shading and highlighting the face with more earthy colours. I will need to make a base colour which will be quite dark to block out the white of the prosthetic and then using make-up to lighten the piece. I have decided to use rubber mask grease paint which will be stippled onto the piece using a sponge as this will give it a more textured effect.

The bottom image shows the paint that I will be using on the piece. The base paint that I will be using is called Paxpaint. Paxpaint is acrylic paint and prosaid mixed together to create a glue based paint which cancels out the whiteness of the prosthetic and it will also prevent make-up from cracking once it's applied o the foam latex. The base layer will also need to be darker to cancel out the prosthetic and lightening the piece when it comes to applying the rubber mask grease paints.

The bottom image is a drawing I did using coloured pencils to show exactly how I want my character to look like.

Head over to 'Casting' for the first steps for creating the prosthetic piece!
